McHenry County spelling bee

Lucas Urbanski, a sixth-grader at Immanuel Lutheran School in Crystal Lake, outlasted 11 other elementary and middle school students last week to win the county spelling bee for the second consecutive year.

The 12-year-old successfully spelled “commensurate” in the 29th round after Nickolas Riedel, from St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Johnsburg, misspelled “cheka.”

Urbanski now moves on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington. The annual event each spring is televised on ESPN.
