Crystal Lake soldier loses battle with cancer

Army Spc. Michael Vukovich lost his battle with cancer Friday.

The 22-year-old newlywed joined the Army in April 2009, and recently returned home from a tour in Afghanistan. A short time after returning home, he was diagnosed with cancer.

He received most of his treatment at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C., before being transferred back to Chicago.

He is survived by his wife, Alison; brother, Matthew Vukovich; sister, Lauren Vukovich; parents, Jon and Carrie Vukovich; grandparents, Richard and Deanna Moore; father and mother-in-law, Bob and Nancy Cole; brother-in-law, Cory and Sylvia Smith.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Davenport Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. Services are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Christian Fellowship Church, 3419 Walkup Road, Crystal Lake.
