DuPage County Sponsors Fair Housing Training April 18

As DuPage County continues its efforts to further fair housing for residents, a training seminar for local officials who work in the housing industry will be held Wednesday, April 18.

The training seminar, Understanding the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Requirement, will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, at the DuPage County JTK Administration Building, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. The meeting will be held on the first floor in the auditorium. Government officials, realtors, apartment/property managers, landlords, lenders, insurance agents and social service agencies who provide housing access services are encouraged to attend.

Representatives from Prairie State Legal Services, provided through funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), will teach entitlement jurisdictions and their sub-recipients about their responsibilities under the “affirmatively furthering” provision.

The training will also detail the Fair Housing Law, statutory language and HUD

guidelines for compliance and record keeping, the March 2011 Fair Housing discrimination case in Waukesha County Wisconsin and the landmark 2009 settlement agreement in U.S. ex rel. Anti-Discrimination Center v. Westchester County. That case found Westchester County liable for $62.5 million in damages for its failure to comply with the AFFH provision of the Fair Housing Act.

Bernard Kleina, former executive director of HOPE Fair Housing, will also display his photographs of the 1965-1966 Chicago Freedom Movement calling for open housing. The movement was organized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other civil rights leaders.

To register, visit and complete the Community Outreach Event Registration Form, no later than April 9. For more information, contact Antonia Harlan of DuPage County Community Services, at (630) 407-6500.

In addition to this training session, DuPage County Community Services and the DuPage Homeownership Center will sponsor Governor Quinn’s Mortgage Relief Project tentatively scheduled for August 25. This event will help homeowners take advantage of free, on-site mortgage and foreclosure assistance. Details of the event will be released at a later date.
