Lenten School Project Brings Goods To Food Pantry

In this Lenten Season, the students of St. Joseph School in Downers Grove came together in an all-school lenten project. Asked to do chores to earn money, students in various grades were asked to shop for toiletries like combs, toothbrushes, razors, deodorant, facial tissue, soap, shampoo and conditioner to help stock the shelves of the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry. Toiletries are an important need that may be overlooked.

It is through projects like this that students learn to give and do for others. Service opportunities to the parish and community are a way St. Joseph students work to incorporate their faith in their daily life.

The school's 6th graders along with their 3rd grade buddies also created hand-decorated door hangings to brighten the lives of those in need. Included with each decoration was a handwritten prayer for each recipient.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is an all-volunteer parish organization that provides assistance to those in need. Serving residents living in the DuPage Communities including Downers Grove, Lisle, Woodridge, Westmont, Darien, Clarendon Hills, Willowbrook and Lemont, the food pantry supplies goods to many needy families. At St. Joseph Church, food is collected the third Sunday of each month. Financial donations are collected each fifth Sunday of the month. Additional food drives occur during major holidays.

Current needs in the food pantry include chili, evaporated milk, mayo, Miracle Whip, cookies, tea bags, sugar, flour, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, and paper towels. For more information on donating to this organization, call the Parish Center at 630-964-0216 or go to
