For the Illinois Senate

25th District: Humbled by past defeats for high-profile offices, Republican dairy magnate Jim Oberweis of Sugar Grove has dialed back his famously abrasive style and set his sights on the Senate, where he says his business acumen is desperately needed. Blackberry Township supervisor Dave Richmond of Batavia has business experience on a much smaller scale — he owns a Lube Pros franchise in Bolingbrook, with 12 employees — but he’s more likely to have a genuine interest in state government. Also on the ballot is Sugar Grove attorney Richard Slocum, a 16-year member of the West Aurora school board. Richmond, who was director of constituent services for former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, is endorsed. In the Democratic primary we’ll go with Corinne Pierog of St. Charles, a consultant and school board member, over Steven Hunter of Geneva, but both really need to come up with some genuine answers on the state’s financial crisis.
