Chicago area, south Wisconsin under thunderstorm watch Thursday

The National Weather Service has issued a thunderstorm watch for most of northeast Illinois and southeast Wisconsin.

Severe thunderstorms could hit this afternoon and early evening as a front moves south across Wisconsin and into Illinois. The storms could produce quarter-size hail, wind gusts of more than 60 mph and heavy rainfall, according to the weather service.

The thunderstorm watch covers most of Illinois east of Freeport and north of Kankakee, including all Chicago area counties and the Rockford area, as well as much of Wisconsin south and east of Wisconsin Dells.
