Thunderstorms may hit as weather starts to cool

The Chicago area might see some thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight, but the best chance for the worst weather is expected Sunday afternoon and evening as a cold front hits.

This afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are more likely south of Interstate 80, with an increased likelihood of heavy downpours this evening and tonight in areas north of I-80. Highs today are expected in the upper 60s, with a 40 percent chance of rain today and increasing chances of rain and thunderstorms tonight.

Today’s storms are unlikely to be severe, according to the National Weather Service. But a storm system that’s spawned tornado watches throughout the Midwest has the “potential to bring large hail, damaging winds, and possibly even a couple of tornadoes,” according to the weather service.
