Triblocal area girls roll in state cross country meet
JEFF VORVA/TRIBLOCAL.COM STAFF REPORTER   11/08/09 11:19 PM   17 HITS

Palatine's girls cross country team won its seventh state title but first since 1996 when it claimed the Illinois High School Association Class 3A crown Nov. 7 at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

The Pirates scored 99 points to finish ahead of Sandburg (142), Wheaton Warrenville South (160), Naperville North (174) and two-time defending champion Geneva (176).

Ruth Allen led Palatine with an eighth-place finish. Other scorers were Sarah McIntosh, Courtney Brown, Tess Wasowicz and Laura Schweikert.

In Class 2A, it was the Beattie show as Woodstock junior Kayla Beattie took first place on the 3-mile course with a 17:14 and her sister, senior Elise Beattie, was third with a 17:35.

"I was so tired. I couldn't feel my legs," Kayla Beattie told the Chicago Tribune after the race. "I just knew I had to get across all four mats because I didn't know where [runnerup Margo Richardson of Mt. Vernon] was, if she was behind me. I fell to the ground, but when I looked back and saw her finish, I was happy."

Elise tried making a push at the end.

"I kept on trying to get up to her and get up to her," Elise Beattie said. "But at the same time, it warmed my heart to see her battling it out and getting a championship for Woodstock High School."

Whittier Students Learn How to Ease the Tease

Students at Whittier Elementary School in Wheaton learned new tools and techniques to help them respond to teasing and bullying when Imagination Theater brought their “Ease the Tease” program to the school on Friday, November 6. The Imagination Theater players role-played scenarios about common problems students encounter on the playground, in the lunchroom, in the hallways, and in life. After brainstorming strategies that might work in each situation, students were invited on stage to try new coping skills such as ignoring the bully, using an "I message" to say how they feel and what they need, responding with a compliment, and practicing positive self-talk.

Follow-up workshops were conducted by the Imagination Theater players in each classroom to provide grade-specific opportunities for students to discuss bullying and teasing. Additional role playing opportunities also helped students build confidence in their coping strategies.

This program is sponsored by the Whittier PTA. For more information on Imagination Theater visit www.imaginationtheater.org.
