WHS Students Participate in Illinois Latino Legislative Caucus Conference
One of the best ways for high school students to develop leadership skills is to observe authentic, talented leaders in action. On Thursday, December 3, seventeen WHS students attended the Illinois Latino Legislative Caucus Conference. Carlos Gutierrez, a WHS student, attended this event last year and recruited a group of WHS students to participate in this year’s event. He worked with the CUSD 201 Superintendent, Dr. Steven Baule, to arrange for funding. Illinois State Representative Patti Bellock provided support for the trip. Dr. Baule stated that Representative Bellock is always eager to support students and has invited all of the Caucus participants to visit her in Springfield as well. Each student in attendance completed an application stating reasons that they were interested in learning about issues facing the Illinois Latino community including immigration, education, business, and health care. All WHS students were invited, with a specific focus on Latino students, those in upper level Spanish classes, and students with an interest in Government or public policy. On the day before the trip, the students met with WHS Band Director, Matt Bufis. Mr. Bufis has a background in leadership development and a passion for teaching others leadership skills. During the session, he reviewed qualities of effective leaders and encouraged students to seek out people with these traits throughout their time at the conference. He talked about appropriate dress, handshaking, making a first impression, and effectively communicating with others. On the day of the conference, the students were dressed in their professional attire and ready to impress. Each student had a set of business cards to share their contact information and enhance their networking skills. After a continental breakfast and introduction remarks by State Senator Martin Sandoval and State Representative Maria Antonia Berrios, students attended panel discussions of their choice focused on education, immigration, business, and healthcare. Before lunch, students visited informational booths distributing resources related to education, healthcare, and local support organizations. There were representatives from UIC and Northeastern who focused on student recruitment. Students asked questions and learned about resources available to them. The students had a few laughs at lunch while sharing information about their sessions. Lourdes Duarte of WGN News was the Master of Ceremonies for a scholarship and awards presentation. EVERY award winner spoke to the group about the POWER of their education. After lunch, there was a panel discussion that included Governor Quinn. As the day ended, students asked what this group could do next to support the Illinois Latino Community and met the next day to debrief on the day. Students completed reflection papers and determined how they would continue working together. It was an inspiring day of networking with Illinois State leaders that students will surely remember for a lifetime. Sandra Osorio, WHS Student said, “I will try to go next year, whether it is with the school or with my parents. I will try to make a difference and get other people involved.” Vicky Vazquez was also inspired by the day noting, “In order for changes to occur, you need to make your voices heard and talk to your representatives to let them know what issues are important to your community. I believe I will start doing this.” Nancy Bartosz
