Officials at Wheaton Warrenville School District 200 are keeping a careful eye on enrollment numbers with a few schools showing a slight increase in student population.

During a School Board meeting last week, Superintendent Brian Harris said a few hot spots have been identified, particularly in the elementary grades.

These include kindergarten at Whittier Elementary School, first grade at Madison Elementary, second grade at Pleasant Hill, third grade at Hawthorne and Lowell and fourth and fifth grades at Washington.

“It’s pretty much across the board,” said district spokesperson Bob Rammer.

Class size limits for kindergarten through first grade are usually around 26 kids, 28 for second through third grades and 30 for fourth through fifth.

Harris some of these classes are one or two students over the desired limit, but they are waiting to add staff until after the Labor Day weekend.

During the first few weeks of school enrollment numbers can change with students continuing to move in and out of the district, Rammer explained.

By holding off, they will have a better idea of the number of students per class and where additional teachers may be needed.

“We continue to get enrollment numbers at all over our schools,” he said.More
