About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force with more than 100,000 volunteers in Illinois and millions elsewhere, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer, and countless more who have avoided it, will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more or get help, call us any time at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org or www.illinoiscancerhelp.org.

Author Vineeta Vijayaraghavan visited Skokie March 8 and 9 to discuss her book, “Motherland,” which has been the focus of Coming Together in Skokie, a three-month initiative aimed at cultural understanding.

Vijayaraghavan talked about her novel and the immigrant experience to students at Oakton Community College, Niles North and Niles West high schools as well as an audience at the Skokie Public Library.

Born in India but raised in the United States, Vijayaraghavan graduated from Harvard University and works as a senior research fellow and project manager at Innosight Institute Healthcare in Boston. “Motherland,” her only published novel to date, was recognized as a best book for young adults by the American Library Association.

“[‘Motherland’] is a wonderful book written in such a manner that it will be enjoyable to older people and to our younger generation,” said Susan Van Dusen, first lady of Skokie and Coming Together in Skokie co-organizer. “It’s a quick read, it’s a simple read, but it gives you a feel for the Indian Community.”

“Motherland” tells the story of Maya, a 15-year-old girl struggling with cultural identity who is sent by her parents to spend the summer in India with her aunt, uncle and grandmother.

Vijayaraghavan said she was inspired to write “Motherland” while observing the changing economic, political and social landscape of India.

“There was also a piece of it that was around the grandmother-mother-daughter lineage and how to show each of them in ways that captured the different choices they had been presented with, the different choices they had made and to create some compassion for some of the difficulties they have faced and the bonds they managed to build,” she said.

Vijayaraghavan said she was honored to learn her book was chosen as the focal point for Coming Together in Skokie, adding that, though she was familiar with the experience of having students study “Motherland,” the events planned around her novel were different than anything she had heard of in other community-based book discussions.

“The part that felt so different was the way in which Skokie wanted to use the book as a point of departure for a whole set of community events and for a conversation in a community around culture and around sharing each other’s backgrounds,” she said.

Coming Together in Skokie events continue at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13 with a presentation on modern-day India by world traveler Bill Helmuth. The event will take place at the Skokie Public Library, 5215 Oakton St.

At 5 p.m. March 27, the Midwest Cricket Club, the Niles North Indo-Pak Club and the District 219 Cricket Club will play a cricket match at Niles North High School’s fieldhouse, 9800 Lawler Ave., Skokie.
