Two District 214 Students Selected as 2010 Presidential Scholars Candidates

Two Township District 214 students were recently identified as candidates for the prestigious United States Presidential Scholars Program. Brian Bourn of Rolling Meadows High School and Daniel Malsom of Wheeling High School, both Arlington Heights residents, are among the nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors.

Each year up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for secondary school students. The majority is selected for exceptional academic achievement, while approximately 20 additional students are chosen on the basis of their academic and artistic scholarship in the visual arts, performing arts, or creative writing. Approximately 20 females and 20 males from each state are selected as candidates. By invitation only, candidates must submit application materials for review, including essays, self-assessments, secondary school reports and transcripts.

Upon careful consideration by a review committee, approximately 500 candidates are named semifinalists and their names and supporting materials are forwarded to the White House Commission on President Scholars for further review. In April the Commission will select the Presidential Scholars and invite them to accept an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. in June. During this event, the Scholars will meet with government officials and dignitaries, visit museums, attend receptions and recitals, and be awarded Presidential Scholars medallions at a ceremony sponsored by the White House.

A New Twist on the Traditional: Paul McCartney Meets Ballet

Challenging the prevailing perceptions of ballet, the Arlington Dance Ensemble will be performing a ballet to the beloved music of the Beatles, not to mention Slumdog Millionaire’s Jai Ho, Norah Jones, and Paramore at their Winter Gala on February 21. “This show is very unexpected,” explained Linda McDonald, Director of the Arlington Dance Ensemble. “We are taking the classic principles of ballet and setting them to very contemporary music.”

The Arlington Dance Ensemble is the performing arm of McDonald Dance Academy and is comprised of dancers ages 10 – 18 from Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Prospect Heights, and Rolling Meadows. One of the goals of the Ensemble is to make the art of dance accessible to the local community. They accomplish this by recruiting professionals from renowned Chicago dance companies to choreograph pieces and then the Ensemble performs them at a local venue for an affordable price (and no downtown Chicago parking fees).

“We’ll be showcasing several dance styles – modern, jazz, and ballet,” noted McDonald. “This show is a great introduction to what is happening in the dance world today.”

At this year’s Winter Gala, which will be held 5 p.m. Sunday, February 21 at the Prairie Center for the Arts in Schaumburg, the group will premiere two very athletic pieces by Justin David Sears of Thodos Dance Chicago and one by Robert McKee of Giordano Dance. In total, they will perform 14 dances created by 10 different choreographers. For more information or tickets, contact McDonald Dance Academy at 847/342-1060 or www.McDonaldDance.com.
