Oak Ridge students brighten life for sick children

Oak Ridge students in front of the toys they collected for pediatric oncology patients

They're learning all about reading, writing and arithmetic over there in North Palos School District 117.

But they are learning about something just as important in life: How to be caring and considerate of other people.

For the second consecutive year, students at Oak Ridge School in Palos Hills participated in a toy drive for the Pediatric Oncology 'Treasure Chest Foundation.'

Since 1996, the Foundation has been collecting and distributing toys to children and teenagers undergoing treatment for cancer at various hospitals. Receiving the toys doesn't take away the child's pain, but it can serve as a comforting distraction.

As part of its holiday service project, Oak Ridge's student council collected more than 300 toys for the Foundation. Thegroup also collected hats, mittens, gloves, earmuffs and scarves for those in need.

'Treasure Chests' have been established at hospitals across the country where children are being treated for pediatric oncology.

For more information call (708) 633-8699 or visit them on their web site at www.treasurechest.org.
