Seven Northwood Junior High wrestlers advanced from a regional meet to compete in sectionals which were held at Hawthorn Middle School in Vernon Hills. Facing tough competition, Luis Castellanos, Joey DeVroeg, Bryan Fiorenza, Brandon Garcia-Galvan, Jovany Parra, Josh Pollack, and Phil Vatamaniuc placed in the top four of their respective weight classes to advance to the Hawthorn sectionals which were held on March 6th.

At sectionals, three eighth grade wrestlers qualified for this year’s IESA State Wrestling Tournament, having placed in the top three of their weight divisions. Wrestling at 126 pounds, Brandon Garcia-Galvan wrestled his way into the top three after losing to the number two seed early in the tournament. Bryan Fiorenza escaped his competitor’s grip to earn the winning point in his match with one second left on the clock! And finally, Josh Pollack who wrestled at 135 pounds placed second in a tough bracket. “I came in as the underdog and I came out on top”, said Josh. All three NW Huskies will compete at the 2010 state tournament which will be held on Friday, March 12th at Northern Illinois University. Northwood’s wrestling team is coached by Ryan Suarez and Tony Ohlwein.
