Golf, tennis tournament benefits Special Kids Network
Golfers get ready to hit the green.

With a tough economy and people pinching pennies, Special Kids Network founder Chad Coe worried about the organization's annual fundraiser.

The organization thought about cancelling it altogether.

"But then we thought, 'We have to try,'" Coe said. "And people really stepped up to the plate. Even in this economy, it got bigger, stronger and better."

The 10th annual golf outing, tennis tournament and dinner for the Deerfield-based Special Kids Network netted the organization nearly $120,000.

About 350 people attended the sold-out fundraiser, which took place at the Twin Orchard Country Club in Long Grove.

The money raised goes to support children with special needs, including those with stuttering or speech difficulties, gastrointestinal disorders, children with autism and children with visual disabilities.

More than 70 volunteers put on the event, which drew people from all over Chicagoland and the country. Some of the main sponsors included Morris Silverman, of Winnetka, Sy Taxman, of Winnetka, Midtown Athletic Club and Gibson's Steakhouse of Chicago.

"It's like a reunion—like its own family," Coe said. "It's an open door to everybody."
