One arrested in string of bird thefts
Posted 12/31/69

One woman has been arrested and two other individuals may face charges related to a string of bird thefts in the western suburbs.

As of Thursday morning the birds were on their way back to their owners after Bolingbrook Police said all the stolen birds from Naperville, Bolingbrook and Batavia stores were located at a home in the 3000 block of Gunderson Avenue in Berwyn.

The birds were recovered after Naperville Police obtained a search warrant. Police also found four sugar gliders – a small Australian marsupial with the ability to glide similar to a flying squirrel.

Bolingbrook Police Lt. Mike Rompa said Rebecca F. Cozzi, 40, whose home the birds were found in, was located and detained at the Wheaton Petland store Wednesday. He said she was transported to the Naperville Police Department, where Bolingbrook Police questioned her. She was then arrested and charged by Bolingbrook Police for retail theft with intent to retain/deprive.

Two other individuals are being questioned, and charges are pending. Rompa said police are not yet certain, but believe all the thefts are connected.

The exotic birds were reported stolen from west suburban pet shops on Monday and Tuesday.

Wheaton police were called to Petland near Butterfield and Naperville roads Wednesday afternoon when an employee noticed several people who looked like those caught by a surveillance camera in Naperville taking birds. Wheaton Deputy Police Chief Tom Meloni said the suspects were held at the Wheaton Petland store until Naperville Police arrived to investigate.

The string of bird thefts appears to have started around 9 p.m. Monday in Bolingbrook, where Petland & Aquarium Adventure, 744 E. Boughton Road owner Janet Star said three individuals …More
