Human bones found at Grassy Lake Forest Preserve

Three men on a Sunday morning hunt for deer antlers came across more than they were seeking after stumbling across what turned out to be human bones in the Grassy Lake Forest Preserve in the Barrington area.

Lake County Forest Preserve Chief of Ranger Police John Tannahill said it was obvious that the small bones, found about 11 a.m. on the east end of the preserve just south of Old Barrington Road had been dragged around and gnawed at by animals.

Near the bones were two different colors of fabric. Tannahill said they were so badly shredded that authorities couldn't determine what articles of clothing they had been.

Police believe the unidentified person died at that location.

Roughly 20 yards away, two femur bones were found, authorities said. The Lake County coroner hopes to extract DNA from those bones as a way to identify the body, said Tannahill, adding no skull or other body parts were found. Once identified, police will look through its missing person database to see about a match, he said.

Cadaver dogs from Wisconsin were brought in today to help search the wooded area.

"It's a death investigation. We're still searching the area," said Tannahill, adding that there still was about a foot of snow on the ground. "It would be nice to find out if there is out there other skeletal remains."

East Lake Academy Grows Enrollment, Exceeds Fundraising Objectives

East Lake Academy President John Calk announced the school’s Annual Fund fundraising drive which ended February 28th, exceeded expectations by 14%. Over 77% of parents participated in the Annual Fund drive. In addition, Mr. Calk noted the school’s enrollment would expand by over 10% for school year 2010-2011, and possibly expand even more as many families make the decision to attend East Lake Academy later in the spring.
“These are challenging times, to be sure,” said Calk. “However, our families and prospective families value the accelerated academic environment, Catholic faith instruction and intimate, family atmosphere at East Lake. I would not be surprised if our enrollment increased by 15% for next year despite these tough economic times,” he added. Director of Admissions, Elizabeth Simutis echoed this observation. “So many parents have requested school tours, enrollment applications and interviews that we are working overtime to accommodate them all,” she said, adding, “It’s a nice problem to have, especially when I read that other area private school enrollment is shrinking.”
East Lake Academy opened its doors in the wake of September 11, 2001 and has steadily grown year-by-year, adding students, staff, classrooms and new buildings. Although fully approved by the Archdiocese of Chicago, the parent-run school is not subsidized by any parish or the Archdiocese, but operates solely on tuition and fundraising revenues.
This year, East Lake Academy will graduate its first 8th grade class. Beginning with 13 children in 2001, the school now boasts over 117 and draws students from as far north as Gurnee, as far west as Barrington and as far south as Glenview, together with many from area towns including Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Lincolnshire, Highland Park, Vernon Hills, Libertyville, Green Oaks, Mundelein and Grayslake. Military families are also well represented and many receive tuition assistance.
