After extensive review by the police, public works and finance departments, Arlington Heights has decided to switch from leasing police cars to purchasing them.

Village officials believe the move will be more cost-effective.

Seven new vehicles will be purchased this fiscal year, which began May 1, four in fiscal year 2012 and four in 2013 when the three-year leases expire.

The village board authorized the purchase of two new police vehicles and two public works pickup trucks on Tuesday.

The police vehicles will replace two in a fleet of 15 used by the criminal investigations bureau in daily cases and undercover assignments.

The two 3/4 ton, 4x4 pickup trucks will replace two 12-year-old vehicles in the public works department, each with an average of 70,000 miles. They are used for daily maintenance year-round, as well as for snow and ice operations in the winter.

The village will buy the all the vehicles from Currie Motors of Frankfort. The trucks will cost $53,379 — $2,621 below the village’s $55,000 budget expense — and the cars will cost $39,216 — $4,784 under the $44,000 budgeted.
